This is a tale for pre-schoolers, although a five or six year old may enjoy the satisfaction of being able to read it for themselves.

By comparing familiar animals with an alpaca, the writer introduces the young reader to the similarities and differences. ‘I have a very long neck. Am I a giraffe? No, I am not a giraffe.’

The author is a breeder of alpacas in Western Australia. Her text is clear, simple and repetitious as is appropriate for the age group. However, adult readers will need to allow time for the young reader to absorb and discuss the pictures before turning the page, although with the inevitable multiple readings the pause may become shorter.

Well-chosen photos are used for illustrations with simple forms and bold colours, one idea to each double page. The format is hard cover 18 x 24 cms with a strong spine.

All in all, this book is a suitable introduction to alpacas and I recommend it for children aged three to six.
